He's still preoccupied with thoughts of a person's entire DNA structure changing over night, XX chromosomes transforming into XY chromosomes because, what, some island dubs it so? It doesn't make any sort of logical sense, there's no scientific reason for it, but according to Kate, it had happened and that's enough for him to believe that it's true. It's not that DNA doesn't change naturally, but it's a long process, it's the process of evolution. A person just doesn't wake up with their entire biological structure different, it's just not a thing. Except for on that island, apparently. There are techniques he's worked with, ways to encourage change and jumpstart the polymerase process but he's never tried it with people.
